"When Orcas Speak" Published in Liberazioni

My article “When Orcas Speak: Listen Carefully” was published this March in the Italian journal Liberazioni! It can be downloaded at www.liberazioni.eu.

This piece examines the striking encounters between Iberian orcas and boats and sheds light on how orcas struggle, adapt, and resist in the face of anthropogenic threats. It is a call to acknowledge orca agency in a political context and forge solidarity across species.

Whether motivated by curiosity, play, self-defence, or an interplay of these, orcas’ interactions with boats demonstrate their assertiveness and highlight the human impact on their lives. They remind us that orcas aren’t indifferent to human presence in their marine home, and expand our understanding of who can be considered a driver of social change.
