I recently had a conversation with Tobias Sennhauser of Swiss animal rights organization Tier im Fokus (Animals in Focus) about animal resistance.

My article “When Orcas Speak: Listen Carefully” was published this March in the journal Liberazioni. This piece examines the striking encounters between Iberian orcas and boats and sheds light on how orcas struggle, adapt, and resist in the face of anthropogenic threats.

"Animal Resistance" has been released in Spain, illuminating the stories of animals at the forefront of their liberation movement.

Iberian orcas' interactions with boats have stirred global dialogue and challenged perceptions. I interviewed cetacean experts and an eyewitness mariner to better understand these encounters and examined how orcas struggle, adapt, and resist in the face of anthropogenic threats.

As many are now aware, about 15 members of an endangered subpopulation of orcas off the Iberian Peninsula have been regularly interacting with the boats that enter their territory. Mariners had reported these interactions from the Strait of Gibraltar, a marine crossroads, up the Atlantic coastlines to the Bay of Biscay.

In a world of widespread normalized oppression of animals, fictional stories of animal resistance can help convey animals' struggle and agency.

Animal Resistance in the Global Capitalist Era is available as of today! For as long as animals have been oppressed, they have defied human control. By collecting and assembling the stories of animals who have rebelled and rebel every day against their oppression, this book calls upon us to listen to and recognize them as fellow beings in the struggle for justice.

The study of animal resistance can have a strong pedagogical impact, inspiring people to think more deeply about the lives and plights of animals.
